About

Metaphor Bronze Tileworks was founded by artist, designer and sculptor JT Gibson during a walk on the rocky coast of Maine while waiting for a ship to come in. Like a lot of ships, strewn against the shoals before they reach the safety of harbor, this one never arrived. Instead, the idea of bronze tiles from the textured beach rocks came into being.

What began that summer of 1997 has developed into Metaphor Bronze, which continues to thrive as a leader in design, craftsmanship and execution in the realm of American Art Tile. Metaphor’s tiles are solid cast bronze, made from recycled metal – see “Green Specs” in Support – and hand finished with proprietary patinas, using a traditional patina technique that allows us to create a wide and luxurious color palette.

JT Gibson studied sculpture at Pratt Institute in the late seventies and learned the craft of fine art metal casting at the Johnson Atelier, a premier bronze art foundry. Thereafter, he founded Gibson Design, specializing in custom bronze metal work and his own furniture designs, sold through galleries in Manhattan and San Francisco, and then Metaphor Bronze. In addition, he has maintained his practice as a contemporary artist and sculptor, exhibiting in museums and galleries.
